It's been beat to death and I will receive the typical knee jerk reaction from certain people but... it's all because they never accepted that console gaming skews older now. Sure, there's no law or rule that says once you hit Jr. high that you can't enjoy Mario or Yoshi but, that's how it is for the most part. Sega brought gaming out of the kids bedroom and into college dorms. Sony expanded that reach to the living room. Nintendo needed and NEEDS to do the same thing if they want to survive. They can still make all their wonderfully magical games with young themes, but those titles shouldn't represent them anymore. Zelda, Metroid and F-Zero can and should stay in the spotlight, but they should be designed for older audiences. No more cel shading etc. No more "toon" or "kiddy" Link.
Sony has balanced all this perfectly since the moment they entered the ring. Sly, Ratchet, Jak, Crash... you have all those games but you also have Bloodborne, Infamous etc. that carries the brand. Sony has always adjusted well with the times and industry. Nintendo has not and is stuck in 1988.
