Yeah, it's one thing that's bothering me. I don't understand the current structure of the galaxy... why is the Resistance separate from the Republic? Why is Leia not part of the New Republic? How did the First Order came to be?

I agree that's a legitimate complaint. My best guess is that Empire splintered, sorta of like the Roman Empire after the death of Palpatine. The Rebellion and Senate gained control of some of the Empire's territory. The Republic and Empire morest likely came to some sort of peace accord. The Rebeillion would exist in the Empire's territory. The Republic would publically denounce the Rebellion while secretly supporting it.
