I think it has the most to do with their NES and SNES days. That's when they built a lot of their fanbase (homeconsole wise) in America and Japan, but Europe was mostly just an afterthought (It also had yet to become a major home console market.) Why Playstation managed to turn Europe into a very important home console market while Nintendo's offerings failed to catch on is anyone's guess, but obviously software (stuff like Gran Turismo) played an important role. As a result, they didn't build up the big fanbase they have in Japan and America.
