NES and SNES  were victims of Nintendo's piss poor European strategy of the past, quite frankly Nintendo's attitude to Europe in the 80s and 90s was simply that it was a "bonus" market and that the main focus was Japan and USA. They did not view Europe seriously back then.

Nintendo has thankfully improved in Europe since then, the problem now is though that the Wii U console was simply not a very well thought out console.

They can beat Microsoft in Europe, I don't have much doubt about that, it's just a matter of having a strong console product that can do it. Another weak console or ill-conceived console though and no.

While they won't play Sony there, they need to have a product that can credibly stand next to the PS4.

Still only 1 out of 6 Nintendo home consoles have been a major success, to assume they can beat Microsoft head on with nothing to back up the thought is niave.

You don't assume anything. In fact none of this is assuming anything, Nintendo needs to get away from that mentality and WORK their asses off for a change rather than expecting miracles to fall into their laps.

Europe does not by and large accept "speciality" or "secondary" consoles either. It needs to have the mainstream games that everyone wants.

But generally I think the idea that they have that they are just going to cede marketshare to Sony AND Microsoft (both of them) and not even put up a fight ... honestly I don't think it works. It only works if you can pull a Wiimote miracle controller out of your rear end every generation and they can't do that, they didn't even invent the first Wiimote, it was invented by an American guy who tried to sell it to Sony/MS first. Where's Nintendo if that happens?
