-For starters. Every single stage, weapon, and pieces of gear that are currently available now and will be in January in the game right now - Should all be in the sequel right from the start, along with new stages, weapons, and gear as well. Make is like Mario Kart & Smash Bros. in that sense where you have original, new stages built for the game as well as retro, old stages that are remastered and redone to work with the new game.
This way is so that the sequel doesn't suffer from the same problem this one had when it launched, lacking with content. Also, have new stages that are much bigger. More on that in a bit.
-Secondly, I would like to see the hub world expanded. Right now we're just at the plaza of Inkopolis. in the next game, try expanding to the rest of the city, where each stage in the game is its own area of the map, and have each area have its own minigame of sorts. Like a skating minigame when you're at Blackberry Skatepark. Or an assembly line minigame for Walleye Warehouse. And these minigames could be played while you're waiting for an actual match to start. Plus, filling the city with all these kids and squids of different areas would be cool, especially with all the Miiverse posts we could see.
And just imagine how the city would be like during Splatfest!! It'd be like Mardi Gras or the New Year's Eve party in Times Square, but in Video Game form.
-Thirdly, expand upon the stage rotations immensely. With all these new stages, it's going to be hard to be able to play them all on a 4 hour rotation. And I know we could just say "Just take it out and leave it to the player." I can understand that and I'd welcome it. But I'm also OK with the rotation system, and it works, so if the developers decide to keep it, I'm just offering some suggestions to make it better. Instead of 2 maps every 4 hours, how about 4 maps every 3 hours. And since Splatfest right now has just 3 stages that are THE stages for the Splatfest of that particular time. For the next game, make it so that ALL the stages are available for Splatfest and just choose randomly from all the stages. It'd make everyone look forward to Splatfest that much more!
-Fourth, a much longer and expanded single player campaign. This way it'll be more worth it for the single player crowd who just want to shoot things up, but don't really care for multiplayer that much. Expanding your audience. Like how Smash Bros. Brawl had the Subspace Emmissary.
-Fifth. Expand upon the possibilities for matches. Back to the whole, stages bigger thing I mentioned in my first case. You can have the tradition 4 vs. 4 team. But how about 5 vs. 5, or if the system makes it possible, 6 vs. 6. (Imagine having a local Mario Kart race with yourself and 11 of your friends and family all at once! Or how about 10 or 12 Player Smash in Smash 5!?!) And have these 2, possibly 3 modes optional for Splatfest as well. Meaning at the screen just before going into a battle. You go into the Splatfest and then it gives you 2 (or 3) options just pick the one you want to go with.
-Lastly and most importantly, (And this is entirely dependent on what the hell the NX actually is. But if is a cross-hybrid, handheld/console system - "Fusion", than I think it can work.) The local multiplayer needs to be improved DRASTICALLY. (COUCH MULTIPLAYER IS STILL A THING GOD DAMN IT! WE'RE NOT ALL CONNECTED TO THE MATRIX YET!) I realize that the local multiplayer was limited in Splatoon because it's not like Mario Kart or Smash Bros. where any and all controls (GameCube for Smash) can work just great with local multiplayer since neither one of those games have as much focus on the GamePad as Splatoon does. In Splatoon's case in order to get a local multiplayer that replicates the online, 1:1. You'd need 8 GamePads connected to one system. Who here has 8 GamePads at their disposal or friends who have GamePads that can connect to one Wii U? Exactly.
But if NX is "Fusion" than with 8 friends who have 8 NX Handhelds, it only takes one of them to have one copy of the game to have a local group for local matches.
I stand by my claim that games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are best enjoyed and at their peak when you have nearby friends and family to play with, who are just as into it as you are. (I always have the time of my life when I play Mario Kart 7 with my cousins!) I believe the same can be said for Splatoon, if the developers would put in the effort to making that a possibility.
These are a few ideas that I think could make the eventual sequel that much better than the original.
