The game should rightfully be GotY just by the virtue of its launch and marketing. They did this without a true ad campaign and without overhyping it. They just gave us a decent bit of info on improvements once, then went silent until launch. That's most impressive to me, that they can approach records without a big marketing push.
The game also deserves GotY because of its quality; they delivered another superb Bethesda experience, but very surprisingly without the millions of bugs. At least in the experiences I've seen and my own playing experience, this game is miles better in that regard than any Bethsoft game before it.
