Shrugs, most generations have similarly classed hardware. The SNES/Genesis, N64/PSone/Saturn, PS2/GameCube/XBox, etc. The Wii is more the exception than the rule, and we've seen with the Wii U, Nintendo was not able to repeat that formula (underpowered hardware + controller gimmick only works when the controller gimmick blows people's minds).
Nintendo consoles are pretty much always unique because Nintendo makes radically different types of games from Sony/MS.
Besides really at this point how many gimmicks can realistically a company come up with that really change the game play in a fundamental fashion? A robot console? Sex console? VR console (wait Sony and MS already are supporting that)? Console for pets? Console for senior citizens?
