Well, it's earlier than when they would normally release a home console. Nintendo almost follows this schedule with their hardware and from I understand they've haven't launched a home console that early before. I don't think nintendo wants to set the precedent that they will prematurely drop support on a home console when it's not doing as well as they want. The purchase of a home console is an investment that you will get your share fair of entertainment. That's roughly a sort of trust between a consumer and product's value. I'll buy this console and I get X amount of games to play this gen or for the console's lifespan. Dropping support early undermines that investment and consumers will probably see nintendo's devices as worthwhile to purchase.

The main reason reason why launching in 2016 is a dumb idea for nintendo is that it's a stacked year for the PS4 and the xbox one. Does nintendo really want to release a home console in that year when the best part of the gen in terms of games is in full swing? It's no different than a guy trying to pick up women at a sausage fest and he forgot to put on deodorant that morning.

Nintendo could easily just hold off, make a good bit of profit on software (by keep making games for wii u) and let this gen run it's course til the normal launch time for a nintendo home console.

What happens if nintendo launches NX in 2016 and it bombs in hardware sales?

Yes, but times are changed, today doesn't work any more to reveal console at E3 and launch it on end of next year. Just look how MS and Sony managed revealing and launch of PS4/Xbox1, both are revele before or at E3 and released in Q4. Wii U is their worst selling console ever, they cant be on market 2 whole years more. You forgetting that Xbox also had 4 year life, and that didn't stopped no one to buy Xbox 360 and at end Xbox 360 3-4 times better than Xbox.

In 2017 will probably be even worse for that manner. Nintendo has two option, to release new console fastest they can or to wait around 2019. when MS/Sony will probably release new consoles, and Nintendo certainly can't wait so long with Wii U, they cant wait even 2017. So they need to release new console soon they prepare good launch and 1st year lineup, and they can achieve that at end of next year.

I dont expect that NX will have same support like PS4/X1, but certainly much better than Wii U has, probably similar to GC support or even better.

Probably they could wait 2017, but why would they, quiacer they relase new hardware they will make more money.

What happens if Nintendo launch NX in 2017 and it bombs in hardware sales!? I dont see any difference if NX bombs in 2016, 2016, 2018 or in 2019.

Well, if I remember correctly the xbox released later in that gen. That explains the short life span. The 360 mirrored the PS3's on lifespan and not nintendo's. The xbox one and PS4 will probably be around just as long. It's safe to say that all 3 make the bulk of their money off of software and not hardware in the video game business.

Launching a home console is a huge investment of resources for any of them. Also if you include the simultaneous development of multiple launch titles and the marketing alone, the costs make it a big gamble. I'm sure that nintendo doesn't want a repeat of the wii u with the NX. Choosing a good launch period is essential to that and it would be wise to not rush.

Nintendo certainly can wait til 2017, though. It can make plenty of money off of the wii u software til then. It should release zelda U before then and do a port for the NX later. There's no reason to launch NX in a highly competitive 2016 versus launching it later on. It wouldn't hurt for nintendo to put some real effort to cultivate it's relationships with third parties for NX.
