I can't see Nintendo ever recovering tbh.
Their name is not the force it once was for the younger generations, most Nintendo fans are probably in their 30s now. They're becoming like Atari, something that used to be cool.
The Dreamcast didn't fail because it was a bad console, it failed because of the damage done to the Sega name by the 32X and Saturn.
Not only has the Wii U has done serious damage but so has the Wii. That Wii audience moved on to phones/tablets, they don't care about Wii Sports/Fit anymore. The traditional gamer who bought a Wii was essentially forced to get a 360/PS3 due to the shovelware released on Wii. They were burned and won't be coming back.
Nintendo have lost two audiences not just that casual one. All thats left are the diehard fans who remember the glory years of the Entertainment Systems.
Now the most depressing part of this as someone who just enjoys his games regardless of what plastic box they're on is this...
Zelda will flop. I don't mean 500k flop but something in the region of 1.5-2m. For an open world game and Nintendos biggest ever game in terms of budget etc it basically won't make money.
Now what makes Nintendo money? Outside of Mario. Pokemon and Animal Crossing spring to mind. Games that could easily be done on phones.
Nintendo have already gone 3rd party imo, its just been very subtle. Once it hits home that phones are where the money is and games like Zelda just aren't worth the bother anymore you'll see a very different Nintendo.
Would they even bother with Zelda on PS or Xbox? Would it be worth it? They could be another Konami in the making.
