MS will be releasing the XBox One successor in 2018, I'd bank on it. 4K resolution, HBM RAM, the works.

They know they screwed the pooch with the XBox One, which currently has a better UI than the PS4 ... isn't really doing much of anything for it. The only reason this previous gen went on so long is because MS (Red Ring Disaster) and Sony ($600 disaster) lost so much money from the 360/PS3 early on that they needed those extra years in the back end to offset as much of their losses as possible. Nintendo made a stupid decision IMO not to pounce on them and let both of them off the hook by taking so long to release the market dud that is Wii U which let MS/Sony have a good 7-8 years to recuperate and get their act together. Which is exactly what Sony/MS wanted.

XB1 and PS4 are much more intelligently designed from a financial POV, neither is bleeding either company any major dollars though I'm sure Sony wouldn't mind kicking everyone's butt into 2021, MS is likely not on that same page, 5 years of this is probably going to be plenty for them.

PS4 didn't even have better marketing (MS had equal, probably even slightly more initial marketing), it got anointed the "it" system to buy by the hardcore crowd due to PR meltdowns from MS. And yes having the best multiplats does play well to Sony as between MS and Sony that audience wants to know who has the better versions of "Calladooty/Madden/GTA/etc.

What's happened in the market today is because of the mega success of online centric franchises like Call of Duty is once one platform gets "chosen" as the "one to get", it snowballs because no one wants to get stuck with the "other" console and not be able to play with their boys online. So once one guy in the group gets their PS4 ... guess which console his 8 other friends are picking up with the new COD/Destiny/NBA 2K/Madden/whatever.

That's also why MS' exclusives are not gaining them the traction they are hoping for. Yeah I can play Halo, but so what? I can't play with my buddies after work in Call of Duty. No sale Microsoft.

Nintendo's not really relevant to this dudebros/online shooter/GTA loving/jock gamer crowd though, so it's not really much to debate there from the Nintendo POV they don't even factor into that equation. That's all Sony/MS territory.
