I think you are oversimplifying things a bit. An inevitable result when talking about console sales specifically, but I believe motive and justification are more adequately described as broad emotional elements of consumerism.
Justification typically comes in when for whatever reason a person can only experience the product of a single producer of a set of rival producers, in this case console manufacturers, either because of time, money, or other personal reasons. Furthermore, I don't really think the companies have much influence at this stage because they don't really get benefit from personal justification, only the inciting of the motives of others that can result of this i.e word of mouth, but even this is autonomous to a degree. Personal is a key word because justification is determined by internal motives.
Motives are more active and are actively impressed on by "the manufacturers". In other words, their motive is to make your motive to buy their product. In my case, I bought a PS4 because I enjoyed my PS3 and PS2, and I liked the cut of Sony's jib at the time. The only game I bought for the PS4 was FFXIV, and I bought it for PS3 so that I could get the free update. Mainly because PC has been taking most of my time because I'm in school ATM.
I did not buy the XB1 because I liked the Xbox, but was annoyed by the 360 initially, lateron I liked the 360, but weighing it against the PS3 puts it in Sony's favor for me. Furthermore, I didn't care about the XB1's media features at all, nor was I impressed by their initial blunder or their "improvement". Sure it was impressive to a degree, I simply can't buy the argument that improvement is better than success out of the gate. With regard to the Wii U, I only used the Wii for smash and haxxxs so, after I found out that the Wii U existed, I wasn't even interested until Smash 4.
