Considering your rank doesn't unlock anything (your level does the unlocking), I have a sneaking suspicion the rank was put there to match you with other equally competent players. This theory of mine is supported by the fact that ranked isn't unlocked until level 10 after you've gotten a handle of the controls and the gameplay. In addition, after a round, your rank will go up and down to a degree proportional to the average ranks of your team compared to the ranks of your opponents. For example, beating a higher-ranked team will net your team a big boost in rank and cost the opposing team just as much. Conversely, losing to a higher-ranked team costs you less rank and gives the opposing team less too.
Unfortunately, sometimes people get too hung up on their rank going down when it's probably not their fault.
For those who care enough though, I've posted in this thread a means to restore rank if one has suffered an unlucky streak of losses.
