Nintendo has lots of IP, but they also need new IP that appeals to hardcore gamers, the only ones who are and will buy videogame consoles. Their first-party studios and the quality of the games they put out is the only advantage they have against Sony and Microsoft, and the only one they can use.
There is no room for complementary consoles, or as I prefer to call them, bastard consoles. Just look at the failures of Ouya, Nvidia SHIELD and Playstation TV. People who buy household consoles are people who want the latest AAA games with good graphics and little hassle. They don't want a system that is way inferior graphically to the competition even if it's significantly cheaper. If they want to stay in the hardware business, they need hardware on the same ballpark as the next Sony/Microsoft consoles, there is no market for weaksauce consoles regardless of price. And if the rumors of an Android-based console are correct, the NX will be a bastard console like the Ouya.
