As I've said, Nintendo really values being a small company. They are obsessed with their corporate culture, and if the company got too big, that would get watered down.
This is after Nintendo expanded quite a bit too, they were at a smaller number before if I'm not mistaken.
But yes Nintendo is actually a very small company. When people complain about things like the Wii U OS being slow, missing features, etc. ... you have to remember company wise, Nintendo is fairly tiny and of that most of their development staff are game designers, not OS designers. They have a tiny fraction of the resources of a Google or an Apple or a MS when it comes to things like OS development.
