Do you think the Wii U will get any meaningful releases in 2017?

You might be right but if Nintendo decide to move toward X86 architecture (which they should to allow 3rd parties easy access to the NX) then

backwards compatibility might have to be sacrificed.

I don't think BC has to be sacrificed. The Xbox 360 used the PPC architecture and Xbox One found a way to make it fly. Plus that if the hardware jump is big enough emulation shouldn't be a issue.
