A few Nintendo Directs has got more than 1.5 million views on youtube: Splatoon, Smash Bros and Animal Crossing 3DS (Japan).
Now they get more than 1,5 million on their youtube channel for "Wii U - Super Mario Maker Coming Soon Trailer"
Maybe they feel that Nintendo Directs are no longer needed when they have established a youtube presence.
