I guess because outside of certain Batman and Superman movies, they've never been that great. Marvel was facing similar issues before 2008 though, when they finally started putting out quality. After the Dark Knight films, Man of Steel (yes I actually enjoyed that film, along with a lot of people), and the Superman vs Batman and Suicide Squad films that are both looking really good, I think DC is finally starting to hit that same stride. They just need to put some effort forward and take their characters seriously.
