Actually, you can get 1080p over both component and VGA if the TV can handle it and the cable is shorter than 2 meters/6 feet.

HDMI cable amnufactures touted the necessity of HDMI for 1080p as a means to make you buy more cables.


 HDMI might not be the only cable that can transfer 1080p signal but it and fiber optic cables are the only ones which can handle 7.1 surround sound and above.
