I think Nintendo will move on to being a broader family entertainment company in the next few years with things like movies.
Having a contained ecosystem of their own hardware will let them leverage and control their IP brands and launch new IP like Splatoon, something that probably would've gotten lost as a third party game. There are benefits to having your own hardware.
