Are you sure that's right?  I didn't read the quote like that:

"So far this year, sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware have increased by more than 40 percent over sales at the same point last year.”

Sounds like its sales have increased by 40% cumulatively over the first 6 months of the year, rather than being 40% up for the month, but I might be wrong on that.

For be more correct (2014):

Jan: 96k

Feb: 153k

Mar: 159k

Apr: 106k

May: 96k

Jun: 152k

TOT: 762k

 

762k x 1.4 = 1,067k ( minimum )

 

1,067k - 945k (what 3DS sold since May)= 122k
