You mean the flag of an independent nation? It's only a racist symbol if that's what you make of it, otherwise it's nothing more than a handful of countries that wanted to leave the union and join together

From what I've read the flag wasn't even that of the independent nation, simply a flag that was sometimes used in battles but never officially taken on by the confederacy.  The current iteration only became popular during the abolishment of segregation in schools where communities fighting against it would put up this flag, which seems to define this particular iteration of the flag as a racist symbol pretty definitively.
