I suspect it evolved out of live recordings for events like E3, where the appeal was that both the viewer and guy reacting are experiencing these new things for the first time together. For single-trailer reactions, I occasionally enjoy seeing the joy on their faces. Some of the Smash Bros character reveals brought amazing reactions.
