Uh, that's not really a fair comparaison at all. I mean, there is more than 5 differents kind of games for the Mario list, Kart racing, RPG, Plateformer, Party Games, Tennis. On the Zelda side, it's always the same style, action-adventure games, and one musou.
And Mario sells more games than Link. A lot more.

Good. Now you have basically proved my point. This is a lot for the Zelda universe. It's time for someone to step up and do a favor to the franchise.
