You know, you could always be a nice person and thank the other person who tried to educate you without them using any snarky remarks. You clearly made a factually incorrect statement. Your reply is completely irrelevant to the point you made. Had you said, "ps3 hardware was not profitable", it would have been fine. But you didn't. It's not that big of a deal to admit that you were wrong, you know.

As for the actual argument you made, you are suggesting that when it was losing money, it was always between 200 -300 USD, and when it was earing it was  merely 15 USD. How exactly do you know that? How many years did that last for? Were there really no other variations?

At any rate, as far as I'm concerned, it's impossible to determine a winner. Each console was a winner and a loser last gen.

Xb360 - winner for improving over xboriginal, strengthening the xb brand, making live successful, etc

xb360- loser for losing billions of dollars due to RROD. Last years of its cycle not well supported, leaving the door open for ps4 to kick ass.

Ps3 - winner.  It was so well supported that it helped the brand, hence the sales of ps4

ps3 - loser Lost bllions at the beginning until middle of the generation due to expensive hardware. Lost the lead, many ps fans went to the xb camp and never came back. Now Sony needs to put up a fight to win the Us and the UK with ps4.

Wii - winner. Massive hardware and software sales. Extemely profitable

Wii - Loser. Many people who bought it (especially the masses) felt burnt after buying a console they had no need for. Support dropped and only a tiny hardcore fanbase was left with interest in Ninty consoles. WIu sales were (at least in my opinion) a clear reflection of customer dissatisfaction with the wii. It hurt the brand more than people care to admit.

So who is the winner? Easy. No one.

The Op's argument is flawed considering that

a) We simply have no reliable source for how much each console has sold

b) 2 sales are not always better than 4. You also need to take into account cost of each game, price drops, first party/ third party, cost of developing the game, etc. For example, I'm sure than wii play cost close to nothing, while other successful games like Halo 3, Grand Turismo 5, etc cost 10s of millions of dollars.

I don't think 8th gen should be considered when discussing the winner of 7th gen. If the ball gets dropped on the next gen, that isn't a failure of the previous gen.

For example, Playstation great steam following the PS2. The PS2's success isn't lessened by the mistakes made with PS3. Instead the PS3 failed inspite of having great momentum from PS2. Bear in mind Sony flat out said they couldn't afford another PS3.

PS4 is primarily succeeding from mistakes made with X1 and Wii U. Not mistakes of 360 and Wii.
