I don't even think the successor the the NX would be considered 8th generation :P
Only kidding :) In all seriousness the NX might have it's own thing going on in that it may act as an intermediate between the Wii U and a true successor to the Wii U. We still don't know if it will be a dedicated home console or if it will be a console/handheld hybrid(although the economics of such a premise would be almost impossible). It is disappointing that Nintendo are talking about the NX so much though whilst the Wii U has no real new game reveals. It reminds me of when Nintendo started talking about the Gamecube(code named Dolphin back then) and pretty much all support for the Nintendo 64 went out the door. This was like 3 and a bit years into the N64s life too which was disheartening to a gamer whose only console at the time was the N64.
