I going out on a limb, but if the NX can continue backwards comp with Wii-u, i think nintendo will be able sell some gamepads stand-alone.

I'm pretty sure that Nintendo will try some form of BC, but that will recquire the handheld y you don't own a gamepad. That way, you reward WiiU owners and sell a lot of handhelds to those that want to play WiiU titles. Nintendo won't sell the gamepad standalone, it has already proven that it's a product very few people really want.
