Because competition is good.  Keeps quality high, and prices low, and shady business practices to a relative minimum.

In the words of Nintendo, they don't compete with Sony and MS. So again, why?

Maybe they don't compete in the Ultra HD powerful console that is also a multimedia powerhouseside of consoles, but costumers like having options. Look at the Wii, it opened a market none of the other companies knew it even existed. If Nintendo had "competed" that gen, those people wouldn't have joined the market, and probably the casual mobile market wouldn't have grown as much. Nintendo competes doing their own thing.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
