Alternative C: Nintendo have been saying the same thing every year, "this is the year of the Wii U" since launch and simply never delivered and the fans are fed up and actually want them to move on.
Besides; they also denied that the DS was getting a replacement only shortly before the 3DS was announced, and no one at Nintendo has outright denied that new hardware is imminent. Just like they've kept on saying that "Zelda is still on the Wii U" without actually shooting down rumors and beliefs that it will also be on the new hardware.
People are reading between the lines, something which has become increasingly easy with Nintendo this year since it is all but obvious what's going on. There's a lot of spin and pedalling going on and very little actual substance to both release schedule and announcments. We're running out of arguments for an extended Wii U life cycle really, really fast.
The writing is on the wall but one has to actually look at it to read it.
I have learned something important in life, which applies to everything from work to relationships; hear what people say but focus on what they do.
