It would still be unfair to competitors and that's what matters, the won't care if its an Apple size company or an Imageepoch size company.

Buying stake is a good idea though, Level 5 is the company to go Yokai Watch is potentially a evergreen title but Level 5 is Level 5ing it, Nintendo should try to control that.

I believe they already own stock on Bamco, buying some on Squeenix should be on their list of duties, and Capcom why not.

I don't know if it would be. Considering where Nintendo is right now, it would level the playing field. But you are right, the ripples of such a buyout would be significant. But Apple is much bigger than Capcom. Why wouldn't they care about that?

Either way, I think the attempt is worth a shot. There's no denying how huge it would be for Nintendo if it worked out. Again, it would be Disney-Marvel tier. But even if not, there are other western companies Nintendo should be eyeing as well, as they frankly need a big western division far more than they would benefit from owning Capcom.

There is a third option:  buy a controlling interest in select franchises.  Nintendo has a controlling interest in Fatal Frame, for example.  So if they cannot buy Capcom, why not secure control over select franchises?  Monster Hunter and Mega Man are obvious choices.  If they did that, they could dictate where they go.  A full HD Monster Hunter on consoles (could do wonders in the West cause let's face it, MonHun is a kind of game westerners want on consoles not handhelds) and a well funded Mega Man would be pretty big boons for them.  Not to mention it would ensure the exclusivity of the franchises.
