The problem with the comparison between Minecraft and Super Mario Maker isn't anything to do with it being a level editor or whatever else anybody's saying. I think the game in and of itself really does have phenomenal potential to be a hit - it's not just a level editor, it's a level editor of the most iconic character in gaming and looks exceptionally easy to use whilst still having a good amount of potential.

The problem is that Minecraft was on a platform that pretty much everybody owns. When I bought Minecraft Alpha it cost me £6 ($10). You really think millions of people are going to make the $300ish investment to buy a Wii U and Super Mario Maker?
