Nintendo isn't ready for next gen.

Well so far, the 3DS is 4 years into its cycle and a year and a half older than the Wii U, and we still haven't heard anything about a new handheld in the works, so that's where the theory comes in that the NX is more than just their next console. But, we really don't have much to go off of until they announce further details.
