There a couple of problems with this theory. The primary being the gamecube. Despite the unique look and disc (which was more to prevent piracy, people forget how much money sony actually lost to piracy that gen) the gamecube was very much like it's competition it was also more powerful than the PS2. As a console it addressed many of the issues they had with the N64 and for all intended purposes was trying to play the same game as their competitors. It was also a bomb. Selling a few million less units than the N64 but having games and tech more expensive to produce. It's failure directly contributed to the decision to go in a unique direction with the Wii. Also the NES launched with a god damn robot controller which no one was doing at the time.
