I'm sure the people making and signing the petition don't so much care about cancelling Blast Ball and Federation as they care about getting a proper HD Metroid in development. It's true that cancelling Blast Ball would likely free up resources for a HD Metroid but I think this petition is more of a statement meant to jar Nintendo into simply listening to its fans. Nintendo is really out of touch with what Metroid fans want this time and maybe creating a petition that's extreme enough to call for the cancellation of a game might get Nintendo to cue in and listen to what fans are begging for.
I don't think this petition is a bad idea. It's well known that Nintendo doesn't usually listen to petitions, so it has to be extreme to get their attention.
