I think these diverse inputs are just a special case for Ryu.
Ryu's fighting game, Street FIghter, as well as many traditional fighters, feature complex button inputs to pull off sick combos.
The ability to do these complex inputs to pull off moves (and even get rewared for doing so) seems to be a homage to Street Fighter, and fans of SF as well.
