No, is not the new mage Nintendo IP because have sold more than W101, but is the new super Nintendo IP because outsold games like Mario 3DWorld and Monster Hunter tree that are super massive IP.
In UK Splatoon was the confirmed 5° best seller on WU first week, and is dropped by only -50% in the second week.
That is, is fact, not a opinion, Splatoon is a game with the massive sales, and one of the best WU seller so far.
