Wii U happened at the exact wrong time. People were waiting for the greatness of PS4 and X1, Even if Wii U was as powerful as both of the twins, it wouldn't have sold. Because people were expecting even more from Sony and MS. Little did they know that they both adopted Nintendo's profitability plan and both machines were nowhere near as powerful as they hoped.
In the end I guess Nintendo got screwed because of the 'core' audience. They wouldn't have bought it no matter what it was or how powerful it was.
