A lot like how we look at the Power Glove or the Virtual Boy today. A really great idea that just wasn't implemented as good as could have been, due to poor decisions based on technology constraints.

I owned a Power Glove, and I demo'd a Virtual Boy.  I regretted begging my father for a Power Glove as a child.  And, I would have regretted buying the Virtual Boy for my younger brother for Christmas instead of the PS1 that I ended up getting him.  I wouldn't remotely lump the Wii U Gamepad in the same category.  I don't regret purchasing a Wii U in the least.  Does the Gamepad have untapped/unrealized/under-utilized potential?  Absolutely.  But, I still find it to be a better console interface than a standard controller.  If the next Nintendo home console doesn't have a gamepad type controller, it will feel to me like taking a step backwards in technology rather than forwards.
