Smash actually didn't really help the series at all. The introduction of Marth, Roy and Ike didn't do anything to the Fire Emblem sales. The sales actually decreased from each game. Awakening had already sold almost 140m before the announcment of Robin/Lucina.

Awakening was just released at a VERY good time with good marketing. Smash helped some but not a ton. I think they were just lucky with this one. (Which their luck will continue as I believe Fire Emblem is going to always continue to sell well now.)

They did release it at a good time. It also helps that the game was really good and accessible. The other games were just good. Not amazing, but good. Best in the genre imo, but the genre doesn't seem to have much competition. Maybe Fire Emblem's success will inspire sega to release some more Shining Force.
