Pretty sure you can't have 2 of the highest rated games of all time and remain unknown to gamers.

You're not just making the assumption that all gamers  pay attention to reviews, but you're making the assumption that all gamers are well studied in the review scores of all games throughout history.

There is a video series called teenagers react. On the NES episode, several of the teenagers had never heard of Metroid before. It should also be noted they all had American accents, so I assume they were American, and they were all gamers as each of them compared the NES controller to gaming systems they played.
