It's in interesting release model and I think its success will depend largely on whether the initial released content is enough to warrant the price for most people. You can't predict legs in a new IP and most games tet the bulk of their sales in the first week so if this hurts the first week b a certain percentage, having increased awareness later on might not be able to make up for that large hit the first week.
Of course that's all hypothetical as we'll have no other Splatoon release sales to compare to but I could see it as one hypothetical situation.
