DKC TF is great, but I'm talking about the 2D games from the NES/SNES/Genesis era. Games like Megaman 1-6, Contra Hard Corps, Battletoads etc. Most 2D platformers and shooters back then were for people who had skills. They put hair on the balls of many a young mind. DKC TF, while great, wasn't anything approaching Contra difficult. Back then, you'd get like 3 continues and 3 lives and then... game... fuckin'... over.
The only 2D platformer that I've played in recent years that had anything on the old games is Meat Boy and that was only if you tried to 100% the game. I've heard Vvvvvvvv is pretty tough too, but haven't tried it.
