So to clarify:
I can buy a game from "Studio X" that prominently features online multiplayer for as much as $60. If a developer does not want me to play their game online, be it for good or bad reasons, they can remove my ability to use large portions of their product without providing any compensation AND publicly shame me. Valve themselves will only interfere reluctantly at most and probably won't help out.
What exactly do I gain from this? Cheaters are not fun to play with, but I rarely run into them. This looks like Valve is trying to treat a boil by cutting off the limb it's on.
