I maintain that they shouldve went after the Power Stone format instead of Smash. I think it wouldve worked better with the characters they had and it would have actually felt interesting.
On topic though...They needed some sort of health bar. The current system makes too much of the game feel like it doesn't matter and the supers seemed really unbalanced (from an outsiders perspective)
