Paper Monters Uncut (Wii U) Review

*As a standard, I do not typically consider games worthy of review unless they have a 5 hour campaign (at least). In this case, the game took me less than 4 hours to complete (at a casual pace). However, since I did not beat every secret level, nor do much of any of the mini game activities, I suspect I would have played 5-7 hours total at the least if I did everything. This game will be an exception and will be allowed a review as a full game (the amount of levels is rather extensive for an indie game, wonderfully).

Originality: A combination of the setting style of Paper Mario, the artistic and musical beauty of Tropical Freeze, as well as the calm peaceful progression of something like Animal Crossing makes this a unique experience. In fact, I doubt I have ever played a game that was so calming visually, musically, and in terms of controls before. Absolutely solid game design! That being said, the story concept is nothing new in this genre, and the overall idea of a 2-D platformer isn’t really refined in this game. I to love how you jump from foreground to background like Super Paper Mario (Wii) allowed you to do! Love all the things they used from previous games to combine them into a unique experience!

Graphics: This is an indie game? It looks absolutely beautiful for a game with cardboard/cartoony characters!

9/10

Art Style: I am IN LOVE with this art style for this game. That, plus the music, is by FAR the best part of this game and that isn’t a bad thing!

Story: Mario/Donkey Kong platformer reviews. I’m tired of retyping over and over my displeasure at games that having more complex storylines like Trine and Trine 2 do. Those two games PROVE that it CAN be and SHOULD be done. Not all of us like playing games that are wonderfully crafted for NO purpose! We LIKE to feel a sense of progression and accomplishment, and stories help with that!

5/30

Game Interface: Annoying or not? All clear!

5/5

Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? Great controls!

5/5

Is it fun? Fun, calming, relaxing, and an overall excellent stress relief. Did I mention it was fun? And calming?
