You're right about the times changing and how it's much harder or impossible to get away with things like blast processing (side note, that really WAS a thing. The Genesis was twice as fast. The only BS part about it was giving it a name etc.) but that's where you have to get creative. Sony demonstrated this with the whole E3, sharing used games approach. They attacked MS, but did so in a factual way that resonated with gamers and it worked so well, they've nearly doubled the Xbox One in sales and beaten it in the US... which was just unthinkable a few years ago.
Had Sony come out of the gates, telling the world that Xbox One's DRM was a great idea and sent the message that it's perfectly acceptable, I don't know if the PS4 is winning right now in the US. Attacking the other guy has been the "go to" in this industry since the Genesis/SNES days and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon.
Which makes this whole love fest from Phil puzzeling.

Well that's what I meant about chosing words that won't come back to bite you. Sony chose the time, place and the way they relayed that message very well. It was playful, and while it was obvious who they were refering to, they didn't actually come out and say it. Most people found it funny. But of course the execs over at MS were not amused. But this was also something that the general public had heavily critiqued them over for a number of months at that point, so most people saw that as MS being deservidly called out. Whatever backlash Sony may have gotten from that was completely drowned out by an overwhealming amount of applauds.
This is different from the aggressive straight forward and unwarranted attacks of the old days, where they even target the audience of the other console to try to embarrass them, or say things like "Sega does what Nindendo'nt." Those things also didn't bring with them any policies that would increase the interest of the brand, such as when Sony took jabs at MS and at the same time affirmed that they would not support those DRM policies.
So I think today, in order to do something like that, you really have to pick your moment, and do it when the other party screws up in a big way. And Sony handling PS4 near perfect this generation hasn't given MS much ammo to work with.

Agreed. Very well thought out and articulated. I just think MS should be playing this a little harder than they are. Maybe they're just laying low right now and there's some formula in place? For their sake, I'd hope so. I can't imagine being this complacent is something they all think is a good idea for an entire generation.
