I didn't say they'd already be talking with third parties about the specs. I said that's part of the process. They aren't going to be talking with the third parties about specs until they've already got some solid ideas on all fronts. Right now, they're probably talking with the hardware manufacturing companies - Intel, Nvidia, etc. Both to perhaps feed ideas to those companies for the components, and to get ideas of where those companies are going and expected timeframes for various products. |
They're probably well past that stage, I don't think people realize how much lead time you need for a new hardware platform these days.
It's not like ordering a pizza, generally speaking you should have a fairly good idea of your hardware vendors and hardware architecture 3 years ahead of launch.
Even historically ... Nintendo inked the deal for the N64 SGI chip in August 1993 ... basically three years ahead of its launch and they still only managed to have 2 games ready for launch (lol).
I think AMD and ARM are Nintendo's go to component guys next time out too and they already have more or less an good idea of what Nintendo wants.
I wouldn't be surprised honestly if whatever "NX" is is already up, running, and playable at Nintendo's R&D as I type this right now with game development in its primary phases.
