I know what you mean, but imagine a legend of zelda trailer where Link is basically legolas, that's cool for the mainstream market. I think that Nintendo has a lot of cool stuff, but the portrayal is not so cool. A new AAA IP  would help too, but again, the portrayal is what matters for the hype.

I think the only way they can build mainstream hype is by making a IP that uses realistic characters like the games of today. Wii U games play like living cartoons which is awesome to me. But most mainstream gamers won't be interested in it. Wii U as it stands now is perfect for the IPs they're making. But to make a mainstream hype game, they will most likely need improved hardware to back it up.
