Retro making Tropical Freeze was a huge mistake. As much as I love that game, it was not what mainstream gamers wanted from the studio that made Metroid Prime in their HD debut. They lost a great deal of their former prestige as a result.
I've been saying much the same for a while now; Retro need to be Nintendo's bridge to the Western market, and make something along the lines of Uncharted, Bioshock, or Gears of War.
The only way Nintendo survives in the long term is by expanding their appeal; catering to the same shrinking pool of loyalists is just a slow death.
