I just think it would be bad for their image, (Retro's and Nintendo's) scorned by core gamers, and commercially superfluous now that MK8 is here.

I think it would be a waste of time and money though to build an entirely new engine if they are making DKR2 when they can just use whatever engine Mario Kart 8 uses. 

Exactly, very wasteful. I'm pretty sure Nintendo shares engines and tech between their studios, and they have a Kart racer engine ready to go.
