But they just launched the new 3ds, surely they didn't do so just to release xenoblade??? the new 3ds has to be for front handheld for at least all of 2016, with a New 3ds metroid, a New 3ds pokemon and maybe a New 3ds mario game.

And I'm not sold that NX is purely the next gen handheld for Nintendo. Hybrid at best


DSi XL launched approximately 12-14 months before the 3DS. 

New 3DS is nothing more than the DSi, DSi had similar hardware upgrade (more RAM, faster CPU, promises of new games). I mean really they could've just called it the 3DSi. 

NX is likely not any single hardware. It's multiple hardware variants that can play the same games because they have the same chipset scaled up/down. Iwata mentioned if they went the unified platform route they could even have more than the standard 2 hardware variants.
